Ballet is a good basis for other dance forms. You'll find many if not most professional dancers gave a ballet background regardless of what style they do.
If you are aiming for a career in commercial/stage dance and don't want to do ballet, perhaps you should consider a vocational college course.
Youth Dance England have a careers leaflet http://www.yde.org.uk/main.cfm?type=CPDF&objectid=2563
Have a look at Dance Careers Day http://cdet.org.uk/articles/dance-careers-day/
Also see their info on accredited schools http://cdet.org.uk/professional-training/accredited-schools/
There is a magazine called Dance Europe - although it does look ballet dominated
and Dance Training in Europe http://www.dancetrainingeurope.eu/
You might need to research the dance form you really want to do and create your own training programme. With Uni costs being so high, that's not out of the question although you wouldn't end up with a degree.
If you want to move into teaching and do need a degree, you could look at community dance
