I'm still 19, but I turn 20 in a couple months, and I'm wondering is it too late to start dancing at 20? For my whole life, I've always wanted to learn how to dance, but it wasn't till I recently finish my 2nd year in college and was required to take a dance class, that I realized I enjoyed dancing and that I would like to keep doing it.

I'd like to focus on hip-hop, so some examples of dancers that I enjoy watching are dancers like Taeyang, Brian Puspos, Ian Eastwood, ChaChi, and etc.

I'm a little shy to go straight into taking outside classes so is there any way for me to self-teach myself hip hop dance, and if so, how would I start about doing it? Do I just learn choreography and work from there? I'm not terrible at dancing and I learned some rhythm from my dance class, but nothing practicing won't help with :)

Thanks for taking your time to answer me!

It's never too late! Follow your dream! You can learn if you have the will and the passion for it why not? What you need to do first and foremost is sign up for a real class with a professional instructor. You need to learn the basics so you don't injure yourself, and you want to learn proper technique. But with hard work, determination, and practice you will be dancing in no time! I'm 41 years old and have always had a life long passion for dance. As a child I used to take Ballet and Tap lessons. Then Life happened to me, I got married and had a family; Not that I'm complaining, I love my life! But I'm very happy to have discovered a new found passion for dance about 15 years ago. I was in a dance troupe where I performed on stage, and now I am a solo artist. I'm working hard to continue my growth with private lessons with professionals, as well as regular weekly classes. I never want to stop learning, and getting better and better. My advice to you is get out there and make it happen you are so very young! Take a class in the genre you love, and then at some point invest in some private lessons with a professional instructor. They may cost a little bit more but you will see the result, it's worth it in the end! And practice practice practice! Also one more thing, remember that it's ok to feel a bit shy in the beginning, you will gain confidence with knowledge, and all those professionals you see out there doing there thing were once beginners as well! Best of luck to you, God bless I hope this helps!

I'm 36 and started dancing hip hop at 31. I think I could be considered a good hip hop dancer so I don't see you having any trouble learning. Find a teen/adult hip hop beginner class and sign up. Yes you can learn from tutorials on youtube, but it's easier to join a class.

Of course not! I'm nearly 16 and starting my first ballet class in less than two weeks!

Definitely not too late! I didn't take my first dance class until I was 15. I know this is younger than you are but 15 is still on the older side for a dancer. I was just like you and really wanted to learn hip hop. I was really shy and embarrassed that if I took dance at this age I would be worse than all of the other girls in the class who have for the most part been in dance since they were 3 years old. Even though I was embarrassed to take it I faced my fears and did it. I will never regret that decision. It ended up going exceptionally well and I was invited to be on their competition team. I feel like it is much easier to catch on and you learn faster when you start dance at an older age. Because now I am completely caught up with all of the other dancers in my studio who have been dancing for 10+ years. So I believe in you. You can do it. Just face your fears and embarrassment and take an dance class at a nearby studio. Trust me you won't regret it.
