Question:
What style of dance should I look into?

I really appreciate dancing and I really want to learn. A local studio offers ballet, tap, jazz, irish step, lyrical, and modern. I am also looking a other studios that offer classes on hip hop and things like that, but I was wondering what style would suit me best.

I have been doing karate for about..7 or 8 years now, and when you hear that you're probably thinking that hip hop would be best because it can be hard-hitting. Although karate uses a lot of force and hard hitting movements, there is much more to it than just punches and kicks. Each different kick requires a different foot position and everything is very precise. Coming from the precision aspect (such as for an instep kick, you must have your toes curled down and your ankle flex forward as opposed to a regular front kick which requires your ankle to be flexed back and your toes to be curled back) which style would be most appropriate considering my previous training in the martial arts? Some other foot positions to keep in mind are that of a side kick (ankle flexed toward your body so that the blade of the foot is the one hitting with your toes curled up) front stomping kick (ankle flexed back with your toes curled up, hitting with the heel of your foot with a thrusting motion) and hook kick (ankle flexed down with toes curled up so as to hit with the ball of the foot, swiping sideways across the target).

Thank you.

Since you said you have been doing karate I think that opens up many possibilities. Karate doesn't open up Ballet as much as it does jazz. I would take jazz because you are supposed to take either ballet or jazz for technique. It is also a possibility to take hip hop or modern because they are both very fun to do. They can be challenging sometimes, but they are very fun. If your thinking about taking Irish-step I would take tap. I don't do Irish but I have taken tap for 2 years and I believe that it would help. I hoped that helped.

ballet is often said to be the "base" for all dance styles. i'd suggest starting there, because even if you decide to switch, you'll have some basics then. call your local studio; they may have a sampler package where you could try a few different classes at a low price. for you, i'd guess ballet and maybe lyrical, but go with what you want! watch a video or two on each kind, and see what looks best to you.

you should watch a class or two before deciding. ballet is important, but unless you really love it or want to get really serious about dance you don't have to do it. i suggest starting with something you find appealing. i take tap, jazz, hip hop, lyrical, Scottish, Ballet Folklorico, and ballroom. i personally recommend starting with a jazz class. mine is extremely fun, even though it's not my favorite type of dance. i wouldn't start with more than one or two classes at first - it can get overwhelming. so maybe jazz and tap, or jazz and Irish. pick whatever you like. Irish has a lot of kicks in it, so you might want to consider that to.

It is really up to you. You would probably like Hip-Hop or Ballet. Look on YouTube and look up the different types of dances such as ballet, hip hop, lyrical, jazz, hawaiian, belly dancing, tap, and etc.

I would suggest ballet (cause its the basis of all dance types, and youll have the strength, balance, and probably coordination that is required.) You might also want to take modern or jazz.
