comfortable clothes and a proper pair of dance shoes which have soles that slide across the flor but do not make you slip. try a dance wear shop for the shoes

Most girls make this mistake.

Make sure your heels have a strap and supports your ankles. if they are flip flops or slip-ons, you won't be able to move with control.

If you can get a leather sole or suede sole, then those are best. But heel support is #1.

Try not to wear something that has lots of loose fabric. I don't know what people call this, but I dance with a girl that had so many things hanging out of her sleeve and shoulder that I can't hold her back without being tangled like a jelly fish.

Practice in the shoes you'll wear when you dance.

If you practice in flat shoes, you will be off balance when you dress up in high heels.

If you are only doing ballroom, get lower heel shoes. You will be using your heels more.

As for latin dancing, you can go as high as you can stand.

Comfortable slacks (not blue jeans). Leather-soled lace-up shoes (they'll eventually be replaced by specialized ballroom shoes, but not yet). A T-shirt or oxford will do: it doesn't matter. She can wear slacks, too. If she wants to wear a dress or skirt, it needs room for a lot of leg motion. Her shoes also should have a leather sole, and they have to have either a back or a strap to keep them on her feet without her having to scrunch her toes. She's going to spend a lot of time walking backwards. Both of you need to make sure you can take loooong steps without your clothes binding or riding out of place. Lessons tend to be pretty casual. The days of guys wearing a coat and tie for lessons are long gone. On the other hand, you don't want to look like they threw you out of Wal Mart because you were dressed so badly. Past that, just be comfortable and have fun.

It really depends on where the lessons are and your instructor. Believe it or not it is easier to learn to dance in high heels than it is in flats cause of some of the footing. Clothing wise it is smart to wear something were you and your partner can easily see your feet. All of my students wore free flowing knee length dresses and the men wore slacks. if you find a pair of shoes you really like but the soles have too much traction you can hot glue felt to the bottom of them. It works great but requires some maintnence, although it is far cheaper than actual dance shoes.

Assuming you're a beginner...

For a man:

- leather-soled shoes, NO rubber soles.

- undershirt and long sleeve shirt if you tend to sweat.

For a woman:

- leather-soled shoes

- low heels (1-2"): you're getting started, don't want to make it any harder

- NO SLIP ONS! Most common mistake is wearing slip ons or strapless shoes that don't attach the heel of the shoe to the heel of your foot. If you do, you can't take a back step and since you're almost always going backwards, you're doomed.

- pants. if you insist on a skirt, do a fast twirl and make sure you're not showing the crowd more of you than you, or they, want to see.

- blouse / shirt with a back on it. don't want some guy's sweaty or freezing cold hand on your back. if you go strapless or spaghetti straps, make sure it's tight enough that it's not going to fall down when you're moving before you can grab it.

For both:

- DEODORANT: don't want to stink

- easy on the perfume/cologne: see above

- breath mints / clean teeth: same reason

For non-beginners: ask your teacher. they can point you to a good local store for shoes, clothes, etc. depending on what your goals are.

Now go have fun...

Any comfortable shoe that has at lease an inch or two for a heel. None of those with rubber bottoms as they tend to stick to the floor, leaving scuff marks. Leather soles are best. Also, no platforms - I mean those shoes with any kind of elevation. You're liable to trip and sprain an ankle if you use those.

okay- wear something as comfy as you can because any type of dance lesson is difficult and you don't want to be too dressed up.

hard-soled shoes, and I wouldn't recommend high heels for practicing.
