im just wondering because i am a dancer and gymnasts in my grade are always like: my hip hurts so much, or things like gymnastics is so hard! I cant answer this question myself because i haven't done gymnastics since 3rd grade, but i am really curious about this. Thanks.

Depends on the person. Personnaly, if you're in ballet and your whole body doesn't hurt when you leave, you're not doing it right. Ballet is hard because you've got to excicute things and make it look effortless, and at the same time hold your techhnique. Now, I've done gymnastics to get my tumbling for dance good, and the only reason you should ever get hurt is if you're doing it WRONG.

With gymnastics, in my opinion, the goal is to get the thing done at any cost, whereas ballet the goal is the get the move done, with high quality. Gymastics, if you whip yourself in the air and turn into a backflip and land it, you're golden. Whereas in ballet, if you did and jete, you've got to get your legs high, arms straight, point your toes, smile, and land silently.

See the difference?

They are both hard in their own ways. I know in gymnastics we try to teach a bit a ballet to add the elegant touch many 'power gymnasts' are lacking. I also, can only really see one side, as I am a gymnast. It also depends on the level at which you are doing the sport. I know that both gymnasts and dancers must train a ton! Many very serious athletes of both sports must be home-schooled in order to fit their athletic needs. Both sports require intense flexibility as well as strength. One area they differ in is the muscles used. Dancers obviously are mainly using their legs and I feel my feet would kill me after a long practice. Gymnasts, on the other hand use all of their muscles depending on the skill. So, to me, dancers have more pain in less area while if a certain body part is killing a gymnast, (s)he can focus on different muscles that day and have less pain in more parts of the body. Does that make sense? Also, to the person before me, gymnastics is half making it look good. If you throw your body into a flip and somehow land on your feet, you are not golden. Chances are, you will screw up your neck, but also gymnastics needs to be pretty. Toes most be pointed at all times, legs straight, arms straight - no body part out of place - just like in dance. In gymnastics meets, if a hair falls out or your bra strap shows, that is a deduction and every tenth of a point does count in gymnastics. My team recently won a meet by 0.0025 points. A pointed toe is worth 0.01 points. Execution counts and gymnasts are really good at making what they do look easy. Sorry, this isn't your question, the other answerer bugged me. Both sports (yes, I consider both to be sports) are extremely challenging and nobody could walk into either one and be perfect but that both take years of training to create the effortless appeal.

They are equally hard in themselves I took both.

Gymnasics: you have to be flexible and ready to do lots of stetching and yes your hips can hurt b/c of the splilts and your arms will hurt as well. And leg muscles although the more you do this the less it will hurt if you know what I mean.

Ballet: takes a lot of restrain and poise.

Your legs will hurt, your toes, b/c of those ballet shoes.

For me personally ballet is harder. It takes lots of self disipline, concentration and while you are in this uncomfortable posittions. You have to keep a serene face.

Hope this helps.
